National League Roundup: Arizona tops Milwaukee

? Randy Johnson praised his bullpen, even though he didn’t need it to earn his career-high 22nd victory.

“Offense, run support, good defense and a good bullpen,” Johnson said about the reasons for his recent dominance. “Guys coming in after me and shutting the door. All those are intangibles that have to be there for someone to win ball games.”

Arizona relievers didn’t figure in this one.

Johnson pitched a three-hitter and struck out 17 to lead the Diamondbacks to a 5-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Johnson (22-5) and Curt Schilling (23-5) are the first National League teammates in 37 years to each win at least 22 games when Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale did it for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Johnson walked two and matched his season high in strikeouts, and finished in double digits in Ks for the 15th time in 33 starts.

Junior Spivey homered for the Diamondbacks, who won for the fourth time in five games. Steve Finley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Tony Womack and David Dellucci each drove in a run.

Johnson used strikeouts to get out of trouble in the second and third innings.

He walked Richie Sexson to start the second, fanned Jose Hernandez but gave up a single to Ryan Thompson that sent Sexson to third. The threat ended when Johnson struck out Keith Ginter and got Robert Machado to fly out.

Dodgers 16, Rockies 3

Denver Brian Jordan had a home run and four RBIs and Adrian Beltre homered and drove in three runs.

Odalis Perez (14-9) allowed two runs in five innings to improve to 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA in four starts this year against the Rockies.

Jordan hit his 17th homer of the year, giving him four homers and 16 RBIs in 13 games this month. Shawn Green and Eric Karros had three RBIs each for the Dodgers, who finished with 20 hits.

Cardinals 2, Astros 1

Houston Woody Williams showed no ill effects from a strained muscle in his left side, pitching seven scoreless innings for his third straight victory. The Cardinals won for the 10th time in 11 games to extend their lead to 712 games over the Astros. Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Reds 3, Cubs 1

Expos 5, Mets 4

Montreal Michael Barrett and Endy Chavez hit two-run doubles in the sixth inning.

Mets’ catch Mike Piazza homered to start the sixth against Tony Armas Jr. (10-12) and connected in the eighth off Zach Day to reach 30 home runs for the eighth straight season.

Braves 10, Marlins 5

Miami Tom Glavine (17-10) pitched five-plus innings for his first win in his last six starts.
