LHS cross country takes two titles

? Lawrence High’s cross country teams swept the Topeka West Invitational, claiming the boys’ and girls’ titles Saturday.

The boys’ team, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, came in as favorites, but it was the LHS girls’ squad that stole the show. The Lions were first in the 13-team field with 81 points, 19 better than second-place Washburn Rural.

“It is a pleasant surprise,” LHS coach Dick Reamon said. “I really feel good about what we are doing. It’s just a matter of confidence.”

Junior Meg Gentry was fifth, running 20:36. Megan Johnson, seventh, 20:58, Lauren Davis, 13, 21:22, Jenni Beasley, 18, 21:36 and Raya Bowden, 38, 22:28, rounded out the girls’ top five.

The boys’ squad edged Emporia, 58-59, and Shawnee Mission East was third with 62 points.

“We got to see some other 6A schools that will likely be part of our regional pairings,” Reamon said. “Now we know that Emporia and Shawnee Mission East will be right with us.”

Senior Dylan McClain won his second-straight race, covering the 5K course in 16:31.
