Artists to pair for show at KU

David Brackett, a new member of the design faculty at Kansas University, and Fuyuko Matsubara, a visiting artist from Indiana University, will have a joint exhibition of their textile work today-Sept. 27 in the Art and Design Gallery in the Art and Design Building at KU.

Brackett describes his works as textile collages, combining weaving and surface design. The pieces allude to evolutionary forces and the way they have controlled form structure and patterns of the world. Matsubara uses similar techniques and her work on reconstructed images.

Gallery hours are 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Sundays; 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays; 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays; and 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Fridays. Admission is free.

Bluegrass musicians gather for annual event

Winfield The Walnut Valley Festival/National Flat-Pickin’ Championships will be Thursday-Sept. 22.

Performers include Bluestem, Mike Cross, Linda Tilton, Misty Rivers, Laurie Lewis, The Wilders, Crow Johnson, Marley’s Ghost, Stephen Bennett, Beppe Gambetta, Brooks Williams, John McCutcheon, Tommy Emmanuel, No Strings Attached, Byron Berline Band, Sons of the San Joaquin, Tom Chapin, Spontaneous Combustion and Yonder Mountain String Band.

In addition pre-festival workshops are planned in the areas of fingerstyle guitar, vocals and harmony, mountain dulcimer, autoharp, flatpick guitar, bass, hammer dulcimer, mandolin and songwriting.

Australian guitarist to appear at Baker

Baldwin Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Rice Auditorium at Baker University in Baldwin.

Originally from Australia, Emmanuel was a student of the late Chet Atkins. He has appeared at various U.S. venues, including the Grand Ole opry and Walnut Valley Assn. Bluegrass Festival in Winfield. He performed at the closing ceremonies at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He has four platinum and three gold albums and many awards from his homeland musical industry. He has toured and worked with Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bolton, Roberta Flack, Olivia Newton-John and Bill Wyman.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for youths. Tickets can be purchased at the Baker University business office, Baldwin State Bank, Mid-America Bank and Kansas State Bank.

RV, boat show coming to Kansas City

Kansas City, Mo. The Fall RV and Boat Show will be Friday-Sept. 22 at the American Royal Center, 1800 Genesee.

The show features recreational vehicles and watercraft. Attendees can register to win a Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Kansas Speedway or two tickets to the Mr. Goodcents 300.

Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22.

Tickets are $7 for adults, and children 12 and younger are free.

Quilters to hang works in Crown Center

Kansas City, Mo. The 26th Annual Heart of America Quilt Show will run through Oct. 13 in Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd.

The exhibit, sponsored by Quilters Guild of Greater Kansas City, features more than 175 full-size quilts and wall hangings. A sale of small collector quilts will benefit the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

There is no admission charge.

KU design professor wins Fulbright grant

Patrick Dooley, associate professor in the Kansas University department of design, has won a Fulbright Senior Scholar grant for lecturing. During the spring semester, he plans to head to The Fachhochschule in Trier, Germany, to teach and do research.

Dooley became a KU professor in 1993. Before that he was a professional communication designer. He served as design manager for the J. Paul Getty Museum and the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles and later headed the Patrick Dooley design firm in Santa Monica, Calif. His client list includes the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Princeton University Press and the Walt Disney Company. He has won several design awards.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s of fine arts degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

The Fachhochschule is one of several state institutions in Germany that specialize in the applied arts and sciences. KU’s design department has an ongoing study-abroad arrangement with the school, which Dooley put into place a couple of years ago.

‘Parade’ features hundreds of KC-area houses

Kansas City, Mo. More than 500 new homes will be open during the 55th Annual Parade of Homes in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The event is today through Sept. 29, and homes are open from noon to 7 p.m.

The homes are in Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Home prices range from $89,000 to $1.2 million.

Textile art on display at Watkins Museum

“Changing Perceptions: Small Works by Kansas Art Quilters,” an exhibition of 48 small works by Kansas quilters, will be displayed through Oct. 4 at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

The collection of textile art encompasses a variety of materials and techniques and showcases explorations in the art of quilting.

Woodwind players plan concert, school programs

The Lawrence Woodwind Quintet will present its Senior Citizens Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at Vermont Towers, 1101 Vt.

The program includes “Allegro Molto, Op. 88, No. 2” by Anton Reicha; “The Hunt” by Jean Marie Leclair; “Woodwind Quintet” by Dan Welcher; and “The Easy Winners” by Scott Joplin.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Lawrence Woodwind Quintet will begin its Concerts for Young People series at 9 a.m. Sept. 27 at Wakarusa Valley School. The program will include the overture of “La Cambiale de Matrimonio” by Gioacchino Rossini; “Allegro Molto, Op. 88, No. 2”; “The Hunt”; “The Easy Winners”; “Passacaille” by Adolpe Barthe; and the Wakarusa Valley school song.

The Young People concert series also will include performances at East Heights, Cordley, Hillcrest, New York, Deerfield, Centennial and Schwegler schools.

Members of the quintet are Sharon Learned, flute; Barbara Jones, oboe; Paul Jordan, clarinet; Stuart Levine, French horn; and David Ruhlen, bassoon.
