Gabe Lewis-O’Connor, son of James Lewis and Nancy O’Connor, Lawrence, has been named to the 2001-2002 Dean’s List at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis., for maintaining at least a 3.4 grade-point average. He is a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School.

David and Janet McAfee of rural Strong City announce the birth of their son, Caleb Anthony McAfee, Aug. 22, 2002, at Morris County Hospital in Council Grove. He has a sister, Carissa, 4, and brother, Caden, 2.

Maternal grandparents are Tony and Marie Ice, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Russell and Patricia McAfee, Council Grove. Great-grandmother is Marge Domann, Winchester.

Kevin and Shandy Hix Vollrath announce the birth of their daughter, Caroline Lorraine Vollrath, Sept. 6, 2002, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. She has a sister, Catherine.

Grandparents are Beverly Lawson Hix, Overbrook, and the late Jerry M. Hix, and David and Jean Vollrath, Pilot Grove, Mo.

Shannon and Joseph Heeb, San Antonio, announce the birth of their daughter, Cody Lee Heeb, Aug. 15, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Antonio.

Maternal grandparents are Peggy and Richard Hayes, Parker, Colo. Paternal grandparents are Karen Heeb, Lawrence, and the late Larry Heeb.

David and Monika Eichler, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Eichler, Aug. 27, 2002, at the Birth and Women’s Center in Topeka.

Grandparents are Marta Szucs, Lawrence; Sue Eichler, Wichita; Vic and Ruth Eichler, Three Rivers, Mich.; and Laszlo Szucs, New York, N.Y. Great-grandparent is Irving Goldstein, Deerfield Beach, Fla.

The Brubaker-Bethel-Globe reunion is set for noon Sunday at Marion Spring Elementary School in Worden. There will be a potluck dinner. Attendees are asked to bring table service.

There will be an open house for twins, Maxine Gerstenberger and Eugene Westerhouse, for their 75th birthdays. The celebration will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship room of the Eudora Methodist Church, 703 Church St. in Eudora.

Friends and family are invited to send cards to Naoma Finlay, Augusta, in celebration of her 90th birthday Sept. 26. She grew up in the Mankato area. She has been a teacher and homemaker and is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Augusta.

The 70th annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show will be Sept. 20-23 in Wichita. The following area youth are scheduled to participate: Tori Booth, Haven Bouton, Lacey Hunsinger, Marla Metsker, David Metsker, Grant Metsker, Braxton Nottingham, Conner Nottingham, Paris Nottingham, Kristin Penny, Michael Penny, Kaylee Wempe and Luke Wempe, Lawrence; Bailey Brown, John Brown and MacKenzie Flory, Baldwin; Casey Davis, Tonganoxie; and Mark Flory, Overbrook.

John C. Benjamin, Lawrence, recently returned from Japan, where he lived with a volunteer host family during the summer. Benjamin, a Free State High School student, is a recipient of the prestigious Japan-U.S. Senate scholarship, which is administered by Youth For Understanding USA.

Before traveling to Japan, the 50 scholarship recipients attended a language and culture orientation in San Francisco. Upon arrival in Tokyo, the students visited several top Japanese government officials before joining their volunteer host families.

Jordan Ulrich, Baldwin, is a member of the Fort Scott Community College fall 2002 collegiate newspaper staff.

Jennifer Akin and Laura Baker, both of Lawrence, have received scholarships for William Woods University, Fulton, Mo.

Akin, daughter of David Akin, Joplin, Mo., and Lisa Bailey, Lawrence, received the Academic Award. It is given to students who are in the top 10 percent of their high school class and have a minimum ACT score of 28.

Baker, daughter of Douglas and Cindy Baker, received the Achievement Award. The honor is awarded to students who are in the top 30 percent of their high school class and have a minimum ACT score of 23.

Valerie Burt, Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List at Northwestern University for the spring semester of the 2001-2002 academic year by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

Christopher Williams, Lawrence, accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was honored during a campus ceremony at Duke University.
