Olathe South soccer routs LHS, 4-0

Lawrence High soccer coach Keith Nelson is glad his team isn’t getting any younger.

But another lopsided loss Thursday at Youth Sports Inc., this time a 4-0 defeat to No. 5 Olathe South, makes it tough to build confidence in an 0-4 Lions squad.

“We’re very young, very inexperienced; we don’t have a lot of continuity yet,” Nelson said. “But I saw a lot of good things tonight.”

Unfortunately for LHS, even better things came from the 4-0 Falcons  especially junior Josh Weir, who scored a pair of goals in the first half.

Lawrence had good chances early, missing on a handful of scoring opportunities in the game’s first 20 minutes.

“We got beat by a team that is better than us right now,” Nelson said. “They have some phenomenal players that kicked the ball over the field. But I’m proud of my guys, they fought until the very end.”

After the early missed kicks, O-South kept the ball on Lawrence’s side of the field.

With a little more than 22 minutes left, freshman Jake Allison deflected teammate David Russell’s blast to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.

“We need some offense, definitely,” Lions goalie Greg Scholtz said. “Our defense is taking all the load right now.”

That was apparent when Lawrence’s defenders couldn’t keep O-South out of the nets in the final five minutes. Josh Kirk knocked home the final tally in traffic from the top of the box.

With the game all but decided, Lawrence had its best scoring opportunity when Oscar Ortega booted a shot above the crossbar.

Despite another loss, Scholtz remained confident and said the score and the quality of opponent didn’t reflect the Lions’ improvement.

“That’s the best I’ve ever seen us adjust the ball and move it around,” he said. “We played up to their level for most of the game, not down.”

“If we play like this, I don’t see why we can’t win the next one.”
