Flash floods spawned by the heaviest recorded rainfall in Kansas City’s history took a heavy toll in lives. Officials confirmed that at least 18 persons were dead in the metropolitan area with the heaviest loss of life in the Country Club Plaza area, where rampaging Brush Creek went on a devastating killing spree.

IN 1902

On Sept. 11, 1902, the Lawrence World commented, “The soda fountain is to be investigated. Heretofore the drink has been accepted on faith and there has been a marked absence of curiosity as to what was inside the machine that caused the stuff to fizzle out like a fussy old woman. Now a commission is proposed to investigate into the mysteries and tell the people just what is inside.”
