Water boil order lifted

A boil order for Rural Water District No. 4 customers has been lifted.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment officials on Tuesday told district officials that chloroform and E coli tests on the water came back negative, district spokeswoman Phyllis Stone said.

The boil order, which had applied to the district’s 1,000 rural customers between Baldwin, Eudora and southern Lawrence, was lifted as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, she said.

Fellowship: Professor receives final Kemper award of year

A Kansas University School of Medicine professor received the final W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence on Tuesday.

Tomas L. Griebling, assistant professor of urology, received the $5,000 award during a surprise visit to his classroom.

The fellowships, provided by the William T. Kemper Foundation and the KU Endowment Assn., are given annually to 20 faculty members. All 2002 winners will be honored at a ceremony at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Woodruff Auditorium of the Kansas Union.

Clinton Lake: Firms interviewed for planning park

City officials on Tuesday interviewed four firms as prospective consultants to lead the creation of a master plan for a regional park at Clinton Lake.

Fred DeVictor, director of Lawrence Parks and Recreation, said four firms were interviewed on Tuesday, the finalists from 10 consulting companies that applied.

The city leases more than 1,000 acres of land at Clinton Lake from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Some of that land is now in use for Eagle Bend Golf Course and an off-leash dog park, but officials hope to create a showpiece park with the remaining land. They hope initial stages of the park will be in place by 2004 for the city’s sesquicentennial.

National Heritage area: Report: Area not yet ready for designation

Judge Deanell Tacha, who is heading the National Heritage Area Committee, told city commissioners Tuesday that Lawrence and Douglas County are not ready for a National Heritage Area designation yet, but efforts should continue.
