Rain, cooler weather in the forecast

The hot, dry spell that has lasted for 16 days might be ending soon  chances of rain are in the forecast for Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist, is predicting a 20 percent chance, or less, of rain on Tuesday, with a 40 percent chance on Friday and Saturday. The last measurable rain was .10 of an inch on Aug. 24 for the Lawrence area.

Makens is also predicting cooler temperatures by the end of the week.

“The first eight days of September, so far, have all been, on average, 11 degrees above normal,” Makens said. “The average has been 96 degrees, when we should be 85. But from Wednesday on, we’ll probably be below normal, temperature-wise, on up through the weekend.”

He said the temperature will be about 15 degrees cooler for the upcoming weekend than it was last weekend.

Monday’s skies will be mostly sunny, with highs reaching up into the lower 90s and southerly winds 10 to 15 mph. The lows Monday night will be in the mid 60s.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. The highs will be around 90, with westerly winds 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon.

The lows are expected to drop into the upper 50s on Tuesday night.

Wednesday’s and Thursday’s forecasts calls for highs in the lower 80s, with lows around 60.

Friday and Saturday will bring another chance of showers and thunderstorms. Friday’s lows will be in the lower 60s and the highs in the lower 80s.

Saturday’s lows will be in the upper 50s, with the high around 80 Highs around 80.

Cooler weather is expected by Sunday, with lows in the upper 50s and the highs in the upper 70s.
