James M. Johnson Jr.

Baldwin Services for James M. Johnson Jr., 84, Baldwin, will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin.

Mr. Johnson died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Chillicothe, Ill., the son of James M. and Cynthia (Weisner) Johnson. He attended Liberty Memorial High School.

Mr. Johnson was an Army veteran of World War II. He served from 1936 to 1945 with the 1st Armored Division and received the Purple Heart. He was a journeyman/lineman at the Hercules Powder Co. and the city of Baldwin. He also drove a school bus for more than 30 years. He was involved with athletics at Baker University and Baldwin school district and drove the athletic teams’ bus for more than 50 years.

He married Ruby M. Craig on Jan. 7, 1940. She died in 1976.

Survivors include two sons, Karl, Texas, and Dale, Scipio; a daughter, Margie Pharr, Lawrence; three sisters, Juanita Burnett, Abbeville, S.C., and Nancy Jones and Rachel Keller, both of Lawrence; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

A son, Merle, and a granddaughter died earlier.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
