White Sox release shortstop Clayton

Chicago The Chicago White Sox placed shortstop Royce Clayton on waivers Sunday for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Clayton was acquired in a trade from Texas on Dec. 14, 2000. Clayton batted .251 with seven homers and 35 RBIs in 112 games with the White Sox this year. He has appeared in just six of the clubs last 25 games since Aug. 10.

Rangers set record for home run streak

St. Petersburg, Fla. The Texas Rangers set a major league record by homering in their 26th consecutive game Sunday when Rafael Palmeiro hit a solo homer in the sixth inning against Tampa Bay.

Palmeiro’s 39th homer this season and 486th of his career came on a 1-1 pitch from Wilson Alvarez. Palmeiro had gone eight games without a homer.

The Rangers also hit homers in 21 straight games earlier this season from June 24-July 18. They are the only team to have two streaks of 20 or more games in a single season.

Pirates release reliever Sean Lowe

Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Pirates released right-handed reliever Sean Lowe on Sunday.

Lowe got one out in Pittsburgh’s 11-1 loss to the Florida Marlins on Sunday, allowing two hits and a run while allowing two inherited runners to score.

Lowe was 4-2 with a 5.35 ERA in 43 games this season, including one start.
