Works by Lawrence artist Henri Donner-Hedrick are included in “Political Woman,” a group exhibition at the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, Ill.

The exhibit runs Friday through Oct. 10, with a reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

River Fest slated in Leavenworth

Leavenworth The Seventh Annual River Fest will be Thursday through Sept. 15 throughout downtown Leavenworth.

The event will include a barbecue, River Fest Run, antique auto club display, parade, concerts, children’s art activities and fireworks show.

Small chairs to raise money for museum

Overland Park Whimsical child-sized chairs designed by area artists and signed by celebrities will be auctioned at the Chairs That Care benefit for the Children’s Museum of Kansas City.

The event is from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday in a tent at the Ethan Allen store at 135th and Metcalf.

The chairs include those signed by the Kansas University basketball team, K-State University football squad, Kansas City Chiefs, New York City fire, police and port authority departments, and Patch Adams, the doctor who uses humor to treat his patients.

Other activities include a cocktail party, a silent auction and entertainment by the Dave Stephens Band and the Miller Marley Mini-tainers.

Caribbean-themed party to boost museum

Kansas City, Mo. Wild Abandon!, a gala benefit for the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the museum.

The festivities will raise money for the museum’s exhibitions and educational programs.

The event will include a Caribbean-themed cocktail buffet and performances by Marimba Yajalon, Echoes of Africa and Pans on the Prairie.

Artist Wendy Ewald, whose works are on display at the museum through Dec. 8, will be in attendance.

Turkish textiles displayed in Topeka

Topeka “Family Holdings: Turkish Nomadic Flatweaves,” an exhibit of 50 woven flatweaves spanning the last 100 years, is on display through Oct. 6 at the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University, 17th and Jewell.

The collection of textiles presents a long tradition of the creation of utilitarian objects that convey the beliefs and values of the nomadic peoples of Turkey. Because of the constant movement of the nomadic lifestyle, people had to keep personal belongings to a minimum. Thus everyday functional items became the artistic medium of choice.

The flatweaves are created by women from wool and goat hair. The exhibit also focuses on smaller works made distinctive by silk and metallic thread, white cotton, tassel, bead, ribbon and cowrie shell embellishments.

A Family Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 will offer a self-guided audio tour of the exhibit, a video about the Turkish flatweaves and hands-on weaving opportunities.
