Venture Crew 2691, chartered to the Wesleyan Church of Lawrence, sent two teams of Venture Scouts Aug. 6 to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. They hiked 70 miles through the rugged New Mexico countryside carrying backpacks weighing between 40 and 60 pounds. The hikers climbed to elevations of more than 10,000 feet.

Their activities included climbing Mount Baldy, the highest peak in New Mexico at 12,441 feet, shooting black powder rifles and rock climbing. The expedition lasted 10 days.

Members of 806L1 were Wes Cook, crew leader; Bill Berkowitz, assistant crew leader; Peter Tuttle, chaplain; Thomas Fulbright; Wes Hinkle; and Evan Tedlock. Adult advisers were Josh Spradlin, Rowley Tedlock, Phil Cook and Herb Tuttle.

Members of 806L2 were Will Sharp, crew leader; Tristan Wagner, assistant crew leader; Paul Biretta, chaplain; Philip Gilreath; Josh Cosgrove; Cameron Hershiser; and Zeke Turner. Adult advisers were Glenn Sharp, Bruce Wagner and Bob Anderson.

Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to the First Methodist Church of Lawrence, had its monthly campout Aug. 23-24 in conjunction with the Order of the Arrow Fall induction weekend. Josh Cosgrove advanced to Brotherhood. Mason McCurdy, Henry Reiske, Justin Deaver and David Long served as runners. Nick Joseph, Tim Barta, Andres Ramos and Steve Wilson also attended. Adult leaders who accompanied them included Scoutmaster Wayne Deaver, committee chairman Rod Zinn, Ralena McCurdy and Nancy Wilson.

Several Boy Scouts attended Worlds of Fun Aug. 25 as a reward for selling more than $300 in popcorn last fall. Scouts who went were Nick Joseph, Tim Barta, Evan Cloar, Justin Deaver, Jess Walburn, Henry Reiske, David Oelhausen, Jack Berkowitz and Mason McCurdy. Austin Roberts attended as a guest. Adults who attended were Wayne Deaver, Rod Zinn, Tammy Barta, Pat Deaver, Ralena McCurdy and Rachel Kasliatis.

Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to First Presbyterian Church, will have its Fall Court of Honor and 80th Anniversary Reunion from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 15 in Building 21 North at Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St. The deadline for reservations is Sunday. Cub Scout Pack 3462, chartered by Langston Hughes PTO, had its second annual recruitment picnic Aug. 25 at Clinton Lake Overlook Park. Those who attended, with their families, were: Alek Joyce, Dylan Lathrom, Connor Bolen, Nolan Frank, Stephen Graves, Harley Brooks-Wilks, Scott Ragan, Sam Corkins, Connor Schmidt, Robbie Andrews, Zach Bradford, Dawson Conway, Kale Joyce, Tyler Lathrom, Caden Merz, Dylan Orth, Nicholas Shaheed, Nick Andrews, Samuel Boatright, Thomas Boatright, Jacob Davis, Drake Hofer, Kyle Rainey, Josh Saathoff, Joseph Waisner, Drew Cerny, Garrett Frank, Matt Carmody, Jamie Wilson, Hunter Robinson and Micha Perala.

A paper airplane contest was held. Prizes were given to the top fliers: Drew Cerny, Stephen Graves, Casey Graves and Jamie Wilson. The pack recruited six new members during the picnic.
