Mill Valley hammers Perry, 45-14

? Perry-Lecompton High football coach Mike Paramore best summed up Friday’s season-opening game with Mill Valley.

“They took it to us,” he said. “They were very good on the ground, and we didn’t execute too well on either side of the ball.”

Behind a relentless rushing attack and equally tough defense, the Jaguars crushed the Kaws, 45-14.

Mill Valley (1-0) rushed for 531 yards as a team, and five Jaguars rushed for more than 50 yards on the night.

“I think we did really well,” Jaguar running back John Goodin said. “Our linemen are young and kind of inexperienced, but as the backs kept running hard, they picked it up and got going.”

Goodin led the rushing attack, bullying his way to 159 yards on 11 attempts. His night included a 91-yard touchdown run that gave the Jaguars a 26-0 lead before halftime.

“I was supposed to go left,” Goodin said. “My tackle got a good block, I ended up taking it right and I just hoped my legs held up.”

Friday’s victory was a critical conference win for Mill Valley. Last year, Perry-Lecompton (0-1) prevailed for a 23-13 victory on the road, and the stinging loss was fresh on the Jaguars’ minds.

“Last year, they really hammered us at home,” Mill Valley coach George Radell said. “We really wanted to win our opener. It’s important to win the first one. You work so hard all summer for it.”

Perry-Lecompton managed two Noah Rees touchdowns late, one on a nine-yard run and another on a 36-yard pass from Adam Painter. For the night, Rees rushed for 102 yards on 16 carries and gained another 57 yards on three catches.

“He was able to get it going, but they contained him,” Paramore said of Rees’ night. “Offensively, we didn’t execute like we were supposed to do to give him opportunities to be productive.”

Despite the solid ground game, Radell said he was hoping for improvement from the line Friday when his Jaguars take on Lansing.

“I don’t think we blocked as well as we could’ve,” he said. “We want our running backs to break tackles in the secondary, but I thought they had to break too many tackles at the line.”

As for the Kaws, Paramore is hoping they quickly erase Friday’s night’s loss from their memory. He expects more positive results next Friday when they play at Basehor-Linwood.

“We’re not going to blame anybody, we’re not going to point fingers,” he said. “We’re going to go out there and be a better football team next week.”
