Churches to have remembrance services

Several places of worship will have Sept. 11 remembrance services on Wednesday. Here’s a list of services:

Central United Methodist Church

Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass, will have a Sept. 11 remembrance service at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The public is invited to attend and offer prayers.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

In commemoration of those who lost their lives or family on Sept. 11, 2001, Corpus Christi is offering opportunities for prayer and reflection. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, there will be evening prayer. On Wednesday there will be a rosary led by the Knights of Columbus. All services begin at 7 p.m.

First United Methodist Church

The sanctuary at the First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday for prayer or reflection.

First United Methodist Church will join other Lawrence churches at noon for a service at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. At 7 p.m. First United Methodist Church will offer “Service of Remembrance and Hope” in the sanctuary.

Heartland Community Church

Heartland Community Church, Victory Bible Church, The Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship and the Lawrence Wesleyan Church will combine to present a special Sept. 11 memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt.

The public is invited.

Kansas Zen Center

A formal Buddhist memorial ceremony will be at the Kansas Zen Center, 1423 N.Y., at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The service is open to the public.

Plymouth Congregational Church

An ecumenical service commemorating the events of Sept. 11, 2001, will be at noon Wednesday in the sanctuary at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. Clergy from many of the central Lawrence churches will participate in the service. The service is open to the public.

St. John the Evangelist

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., will commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001, by ringing the church bell Wednesday for five minutes at the times that each attack occurred.

There will be a 12:10 p.m. Mass followed by prayer through the afternoon, during which the names of those who lost their lives will be available to read and pray over. Parish activities will conclude at 6 p.m. with a benediction.

St. John’s United Church of Christ

Baldwin The Rev. Peter Ross-Gotta, who was at ground zero in New York City as a support team member with the American Red Cross, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 396 E. 900 Road, Baldwin.

Linda, Jess and Joe Hodgson will sing special selections composed in remembrance of the attack on the World Trade Center.

St. John’s is 5 miles west of U.S. Highway 59 and one mile north of Worden on U.S. Highway 56.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will be open on Wednesday, starting at 7 a.m., for anyone interested in a quiet space for meditation, prayer and reflection. The bells of Trinity will toll at 7:48 a.m., 8:03 a.m., 8:43 a.m. and 9:10 a.m., the times of the four attacks.

Morning Prayer will be read at 7 a.m. Prayers at Noonday will be recited at noon. Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Jonathon Jensen celebrating and preaching.

Trinity’s adult choir will perform “Lachrymose” from Mozart’s “Requiem” during the service. There will be anointing at all three services.

Visitors to Trinity are welcome to view the video “Ground Zero Spirituality: the Story of St. Paul’s Chapel,” which will be shown in the parish library. It is the story of St. Paul’s, the church in the shadow of the towers, and the involvement of its people since the tragedy of Sept. 11.

Unity Church

Unity Church, 900 Madeline Lane, will offer a prayer vigil from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The vigil is open to the public.

Wheatland Church of Christ

The Wheatland Church of Christ, 1449 Kasold Drive, will have a 7 p.m. service Wednesday to remember the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy. The church also will have a prayer vigil from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

The service and prayer vigil are open to the public.
