Area Roundup: Pyle pushes Eudora past Prairie View

? Andrew Pyle rushed for 180 yards and five touchdowns on 27 carries in new coach Gregg Webb’s offense, and Eudora High opened its football season with a 39-12 rout of Prairie View.

“It was fine at times,” Webb said of the new scheme. “I’m sure we probably didn’t block more plays right than we did wrong, but you have to go through those learning pains. It was an ugly first-game performance for a new staff, a new offense and a new defense. We were real nervous about getting that first one out of the way. Our kids seemed to be pretty tense.”

Pyle scored the Cardinals’ first two touchdowns, and quarterback Tyler Cleveland, who was 3-for-4 for 54 yards passing, scored on a six-yard run, putting the Cards up 21-0 at halftime.

Prairie View scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, but Pyle scored three times in the fourth.

“Our kids got a little flat, but we sucked it up a bit in the second half,” Webb said.

DeSoto 33, Leavenworth Immaculata 20

DeSoto  All-Kaw Valley League running back Michael Allen picked up where he left off last season.

Allen, who has rushed for 2,560 yards in the past two seasons for DeSoto, rushed 36 times for 259 yards and five touchdowns in a season-opening win over Leavenworth Immaculata.

Allen, who sat out four series in the middle of the game while having his ankle taped, scored on runs of three, three, 47, 10 and one yards.

DeSoto jumped to a 21-0 lead on three touchdown runs by Allen before giving up 20 unanswered points to the Raiders.

“Last year, we’d get off to great starts,” DeSoto coach Brad Scott said, “and we’d let a team get back in and beat us, so this was a pretty big step for us to stay in and win this ball game.”

Carbondale  Shane Miles completed 11 of 14 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, and Santa Fe Trail scored on a run, a pass, a pass interception return, two fumble returns and a punt return.

“I think that’s just the way the game went,” SFT coach Bob Von Stein said. “It was spread out, wide-open, and the ball was bouncing around out there. And we were kind of dominating on defense, and they were very aggressive.”

Miles also rushed for a touchdown. His TD pass was a 51-yarder to Cameron Babb, who finished with four catches for 90 yards.

“You never know what to expect from your first game,” Von Stein said. “It’s nice to have on videotape, so we can watch our mistakes, see what we did wrong and correct our mistakes.”
