American League Roundup: Twins halt A’s streak, 6-0

? Their winning streak stopped at 20 games, the Oakland Athletics still have the AL West race to worry about.

Shut out by Brad Radke, the A’s fell short of matching the second-longest winning streak in baseball history with a 6-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday night in a Metrodome filled with fans waving Homer Hankies.

They also saw their division lead over Anaheim shrink to two games.

“It’s amazing 20 games in a row and we still haven’t really pulled away,” said Scott Hatteberg, who had two hits in Oakland’s first game since his ninth-inning, pinch-hit homer made up for a blown 11-0 lead and gave the A’s a 12-11 victory over Kansas City.

“Our streak’s really overshadowed the way they’ve played,” Hatteberg said of Anaheim, which beat Baltimore 6-3 for its eighth straight win. “But it hasn’t surprised us.”

After playing the Twins twice more, the A’s play 11 straight against the Angels and Seattle their two pursuers in the AL West.

“They’re not going away,” said Cory Lidle, who lost for the first time since July 30.

The A’s had set the AL mark for consecutive victories since their last loss, 2-1 to Toronto on Aug. 12.

“Obviously, it wasn’t going go on forever,” Lidle said. “It’s quiet in here right now, but I think everyone’s excited about what we’ve done.”

The Twins were just as impressed.

“To win 20 games in a row, I don’t know too many high school teams that do that,” said Corey Koskie, who went 3-for-3 with a homer and an RBI double. “To do that at the major league level is an amazing feat.”

Angels 6, Orioles 3

Baltimore Garret Anderson hit his third homer in two games and his major league-leading 52nd double as Anaheim won its eighth straight.

Rookie John Lackey (8-3) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. His second win over Baltimore in six days left the right-hander 6-1 in his last seven starts.

Yankees 8, Tigers 1

New York David Wells pitched a five-hitter and Jason Giambi hit his 35th home run.

Wells (16-7) won for the ninth time in his last 11 starts, and only allowed a Tiger past second base once. He walked none and struck out five in his second complete game of the season and 48th of his career.

Jorge Posada set a Yankees record for catchers with his 36th double and also added an RBI single.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 2

Boston Benny Agbayani drove in three runs in his Boston debut as the Red Sox temporarily halted their late-season slide.

Indians 9, White Sox 7

Chicago Lee Stevens homered twice and tied a career high with six RBIs as Cleveland beat Mark Buehrle and Chicago. Dave Burba (5-5), making his first start for Cleveland this season, allowed four runs.

Rangers 9, Devil Rays 3

St. Petersburg, Fla. Todd Hollandsworth hit a two-run shot in the ninth inning to extend Texas’ home-run streak. The Rangers have homered in 24 straight games, one short of the major league record shared by the New York Yankees (1941), Detroit (1994) and Atlanta (1998).
