Houston moved within 4 1/2 games of first-place St. Louis in the NL Central. The Cardinals were off Thursday.

Billy Wagner (4-2) pitched 123 innings for the win.

New York Steve Trachsel allowed a run in seven sharp innings as New York beat Florida.

Jeromy Burnitz and Ty Wigginton hit back-to-back homers for the Mets, who have won three in a row since setting an NL record by losing 15 straight home games.

Trachsel (9-10) won for the first time in five starts. He scattered six hits while walking three and striking out four.

Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his 30th save, his first at home since July 28.

Diamondbacks 8, Giants 5

San Francisco Barry Bonds’ 41st home runs wasn’t enough as Arizona beat San Francisco.

Curt Schilling earned his major-league leading 22nd win of the season.
