Driver goes to jail after giving false ID

It didn’t matter what identification a man tried to give Lawrence Police early Wednesday, he was still going to jail.

A police report gave the following account:

About 2:30 a.m., an officer stopped a 1995 BMW for making an illegal turn in the 1700 block of Iowa Street. As is standard practice, the officer ran a warrant check using the motorist’s driver’s license.

That check showed there was an outstanding warrant for the suspect’s arrest in Kansas City, Kan. The suspect was taken to the Douglas County Jail.

At the jail, however, the man suddenly claimed he was not the person depicted on the driver’s license he had given police. Instead, he said he was Damon Walker, a transient. The person on the driver’s license, Robert L. Kendrix Jr., Kansas City, Kan., with a similar likeness, was a relative, police learned.

Police confirmed Walker’s identity but kept him in jail anyway. Officers had determined Walker also had a warrant issued for him by the Kansas Department of Corrections.
