Arrangements had been made to reopen negotiations between the city and police/firefighter groups about 1978 salaries and benefits after a long series of breakdowns and some turmoil. The city, however, offered little hope of any major new concessions in the bargaining process.

Another 3.45 inches of rain fell overnight and there was flooding of residential areas, similar to what occurred earlier in the year. Residents were up in arms about the city’s policy toward such damage and were seeking prompt redress. The city commission already had called for a flood study but that did little to assuage the anger of the people in the flooded regions.

IN 1962

A highly prized painting, “Portrait of Line Campineanu,” was stolen from the Kansas University Museum of Art. It was a product of the genius of Edouard Manet and was highly regarded.

IN 1902

On Sept. 2, 1902, the Lawrence World commented: “The people are always glad to have the students come back. This is aside from the business advantages. Something is always doing, something moving. The students bring new life and energy to the town and when once more the familiar sound of ‘Rock Chalk’ is heard it will bring a general smile of satisfaction to all.”
