Activism: Living wage group plans Labor Day picnic

Supporters of a “living wage” ordinance in Lawrence will gather Monday for a Labor Day picnic.

The event, organized by the Kaw Valley Living Wage Alliance, is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at South Park, south of 11th and Massachusetts streets.

Speakers include the Rev. Charles Polifka of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Dan Wildcat of Haskell Indian Nations University and Allan Hanson of the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice. Music, clowns and children’s activities also will be provided.

The alliance advocates an ordinance that would require Lawrence companies that receive tax breaks to provide a living wage, or enough money to keep a family of three 30 percent above the poverty level.
