How they scored

First Quarter

9:51 FG Adam Benike 32. Iowa State started on its own 31 and drove 54 yards in eight plays. Seneca Wallace completed a 33-yard pass to Lance Young, giving ISU a first down at KU’s 18. After a short gain by Hiawatha Rutland, KU linebacker Banks Floodman stopped Wallace on consecutive plays including a sack. ISU settled for Benike’s kick. (Iowa State 3, Kansas 0).

5:40 Lane Danielsen 9 run. Linebacker Jeremy Loyd intercepted Zach Dyer’s pass and returned it one yard to the KU 27. Wallace completed a 16-yard pass to Young on first down. Three plays later, Danielsen scored to cap a four-play, 27-yard drive. Benike kick. (Iowa State 10, Kansas 0).

Second Quarter

2:47 Hiawatha Rutland 7 run. ISU sacked Dyer twice, forcing KU to punt from its own 7. Wallace completed a 25-yard pass to Jamaul Montgomery on first down. Rutland then carried three straight times for 36 yards, including the touchdown, to complete the four-play, 43-yard drive. Benike kick. (Iowa State 17, Kansas 0).

Third Quarter

5:33 Michael Wagner 1 run. After missing a field goal on its first drive of the second half, ISU drove 53 yards in nine plays on its next possession. Rutland picked up a big first down, running 17 yards on third-and-six from the 18 to set up the TD. Benike kick. (Iowa State 24, Kansas 0).

0:00 FG Johnny Beck 28 yards. Kansas finally got on the board with a 15-play, 68-yard drive. Bill Whittemore, who replaced Dyer at the start of the second half, carried four times for 22 yards on the drive. The biggest pass play of the drive was a pass interference call on Iowa State that negated an interception by Steve Paris near the goal line. The penalty moved KU to the 12, where the Jayhawks stalled. Whittemore recovered his own fumble on third down, and the Jayhawks settled for three points. (Iowa State 24, Kansas 3).

Fourth Quarter

13:01 Wagner 6 run. Wallace completed a 42-yard pass to Jack Whitiver to key a six-play, 65-yard drive. Wagner carried four times for 22 yards. Benike kick. (Iowa State 31, Kansas 3).

7:21 Brian Thompson 7 run. Thompson had runs of 12 and 23 yards to spark a nine-play, 67 yard drive. Benike kick. (Iowa State 38, Kansas 3).

0:06 Thompson 15 run. KU faked a punt, but Curtis Ansel’s pass was intercepted by Nick Linder and returned 22 yards to the KU 45. Thompson then carried the ball on seven straight plays. Benike kick. (Iowa State 45-3).
