Bush urges service on 9-11

? President Bush called on Saturday for a “September of Service” to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

As the first anniversary approaches, he said, “difficult memories of planes and buildings will resurface.”

“But so will images of brave individuals coming to the aid of neighbors in need,” he added in his weekly radio address, urging Americans to commemorate “the memory of those lost by serving others.”

The president also declared Sept. 6-8 as “national days of prayer and remembrance” and urged all Americans to attend their places of worship to pray for those who were killed, their families and other survivors.

Bush will make anniversary visits to all three sites of the attacks on Sept. 11, starting in the morning at the Pentagon in Washington and ending in the afternoon at ground zero in New York, where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood. At midday, he’ll visit the Pennsylvania field where one of the four hijacked airliners crashed.

In all, more than 3,000 people were killed.

But the outpouring of public service since can be one of the tragedies’ lasting legacies, the president said.

“In all of the trials we have faced this past year, countless acts of generosity and sacrifice have revealed the good heart of our nation,” Bush said. “Time and again, our country has shown the strength of its character by responding to acts of evil with acts of good.”
