Goosebumps in store for Halloween

Harry Potter couldn’t have brewed up a spookier forecast  gloomy skies and bone-chilling temperatures.

“This Halloween is going to be cold,” said Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist. “It’s about 25 to 30 degrees below where we should be on a normal Halloween, which is about 62 degrees. We will be right around 35 for the rest of the day.”

Today’s weather seems to be getting into the spirit of the holiday by putting on an Old Man Winter costume.

“A snowflake or two is possible, especially this morning,” Makens said. “Coming up tonight, we’ll have nothing falling from the clouds, but it’s going to stay cloudy and cold, about 30 degrees.”

Friday’s skies will be mostly cloudy, with a few peeks of sunshine Friday afternoon as the temperature reaches a high of 43, he said. But the cold returns Friday night, with the overnight low expected to drop to 30.

Fans heading out to Friday night’s area high school football games will find the temperature about 40 degrees at kickoff time in the early evening.

“By the end of the game, it will probably be down to close to freezing. Folks need to dress warmly for that, but it will stay dry,” Makens said.

Saturday’s skies will be mostly cloudy, with some sunshine throughout the morning and the early afternoon. But the clouds will be back by the late afternoon, when temperatures reach a high of 48, Makens said.

Football fans heading out to Memorial Stadium Saturday to see the Kansas University-Kansas State University game will need to dress warmly, he said.

“I’m sure hot chocolate will be a hot seller on Saturday,” he said.

Cloudy conditions are expected again on Sunday, with a high of 50 and a chance for rain late in the day. The forecast calls for cloudy skies and a chance of rain on Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the upper 40s.
