Free State heads to Manhattan with playoff berth on line
Manhattan ? This should be good.
Two teams that have never played each other are facing off with a state playoff berth on the line.
Making matters even more complicated when the Free State High boys soccer team travels to Manhattan for a regional final tentatively slated to start at 6 p.m. today is that the Indians can’t play on their normal field.
Manhattan administrators scrambled to find another field and came up with the field adjacent to Ahearn Fieldhouse, where the Kansas State University football team used to play and where club soccer and rugby teams practice.
At least, that’s what FSHS athletic director Steve Grant thought late Wednesday night. Game details won’t be final until today.
Fun, huh?
“We’re still not 100-percent sure,” Grant said. “As near as we can tell, it’s going to be 6 o’clock at the field next to the old stadium.”
The city won’t let the school use its regular field because of the wear and tear that would come from playing on a rain-soaked field.
But that’s the least of FSHS coach Jason Pendleton’s worries.
The Indians (12-3) dispatched Leavenworth, 10-0, on Tuesday and should be a formidable opponent. They have size, excellent ball control and good team speed.
“From what we understand, they’re able to possess the ball and kick it around a lot,” Pendleton said. “They’re definitely a tough opponent and we’re going to have to turn it up a notch to get past them.”
Free State (9-6-2) beat Lawrence High, 3-1, on Tuesday in much the same fashion by controlling the ball and dictating tempo. Three Firebirds scored goals, and only a hard shot late prevented a shutout. In all, it was a game, given the wet, muddy conditions, with which Pendleton was pleased.
“We did some really positive things with the ball,” Pendleton said. “We passed it around and started the attack very well.”
Expect more of the same weather conditions today  which means anything can happen.
“That’s for sure,” Indians coach Doug Desmarteau said. “It does equalize a lot of things  how the ball’s gonna bounce, how the footing is, all that.”
FSHS will be without senior midfielder Adam Bittlingmayer, who received two yellow cards against LHS, and senior defender Zach Sears, who will not play because of disciplinary reasons.
It’ll make things tough on the Firebirds, but Pendleton is confident they can duplicate last year’s trip to the state quarterfinals.
“If we play like we’re capable of, we should have a chance to be there in the end and get a win,” he said.
