Lawrence visit pairs Sebelius, supporters

Galen Worthington is one of those Republicans for Democrat Kathleen Sebelius.

Worthington, a Kansas University student from Lawrence, braved the morning fog Monday to meet and talk with Sebelius at a campaign stop at the Westside Deli & Market, 4931 W. Sixth St.

“She represents a moderate view,” Worthington said. “The things she has voiced about education and health insurance, to me, reflect someone who is willing to listen.”

Sebelius, who faces Republican Tim Shallenburger in the race for governor, urged about 30 supporters at the deli to get the vote out. The election is Nov. 5.

During the stop, Sebelius alluded to the big budget problems facing the next governor.

Kansas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Sebelius, left, answers a question while Republican candidate Tim Shallenburger looks on during a debate Oct. 22 in Topeka. Sebelius visited in Lawrence on Monday.

“Your work is not over yet. We need a lot of talent we can’t afford. We didn’t get into the mess we’re in overnight, and it’s not going to be solved overnight. There are tough decisions to be made,” she said.

Sebelius plans to spend the next four days visiting towns across Kansas. Shallenburger completed a 30-city bus tour last weekend and campaigned Monday in Kansas City, Kan., and Overland Park.

After the morning stop at Westside, Sebelius headed to Ottawa, Overland Park and Paola.
