Insurance race reports show Praeger’s funding from industry

? Republican Sandy Praeger of Lawrence and Democrat Jim Garner are raising a similar amount of money in their race for Kansas insurance commissioner.

But Praeger is receiving a significant portion from the insurance industry, while Garner has refused those contributions, according to campaign finance reports filed Monday.

The reports cover the period from July 26 through Oct. 24. The election is Nov. 5.

Praeger, a state senator, reported raising $184,000 with $41,000 left over from the previous reporting period, and spending $219,000. Garner, a state representative from Coffeyville, reported raising $158,000 with $37,000 leftover, and spending $190,000.

Garner’s campaign report was filed right at the deadline and the Secretary of State’s Office did not make his itemized list of contributions available. But Garner has refused campaign contributions from the insurance industry and denounced Praeger for taking donations from insurers.

In Praeger’s report, she shows numerous $2,000 contributions from insurance companies and corporate officers.

Prior to this report, Garner had estimated that nearly one-third of Praeger’s donations came from insurance companies.
