Old home town – 25 and 40 years ago today

IN 1977 – What was to be done with the 1,100-foot, 61-year-old bridge over the Kansas River when the new Kaw spans in Lawrence were ready? Apparently a watery grave was the fate. Workmen were to begin breaking up the old bridge in a month or so and letting the debris fall into the river.

Balmy weather with daytime temperatures in the 70s was expected to remain here for another few days, with nighttime lows in the middle 40s. Demolition teams were considering how to get rid of some of the old rural bridges that would be affected by the construction of Clinton Lake.

IN 1962 – An expert at the Army Corps of Engineers office in Kansas City said there was excellent justification for believing the Perry Reservoir could be at a normal pool with about 12,500 surface acres of water by the middle of calendar 1967.
