Lawrence photographer to showcase works

Kansas City, Mo. A solo exhibition by Lawrence photographer Shakura Jackson will open Friday at the Kansas City Artists Coalition’s New Works Gallery.

The exhibition, called “Dreaming of Cows,” contains photographic interpretations/manipulations of the painted fiberglass sculptures in the Kansas City Cow Parade. Jackson then went on to investigate live cows in the pasture and will include some of their portraits as well.

The opening reception will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 201 Wyandotte, Kansas City, Mo. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Variety show to hold auditions

Auditions for Lawrence’s only short attention span variety show will be Nov. 6-7 at the Lawrence Public Library.

Three Minutes or Less (3MOL), which was featured in the recently published “Kansas Curiosities,” by Lawrence author Pam Grout, is in its sixth season.

The variety show is a fund-raiser for a local nonprofit organization. This year’s beneficiary will be Tenants to Homeowners.

The variety show is looking for acts of three minutes or less to be performed on Jan. 10 at Liberty Hall. Those interested in participating should bring a prepared three-minute piece to the library, 707 Vt., between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 or Nov. 7.

Jazz museum to hold storytelling session

Kansas City, Mo. Children can work out their trick-or-treating sugar rushes at the American Jazz Museum’s jazz storytelling session on Friday.

Singing, dancing and jumping up and down are encouraged at the bimonthly events.

Friday’s program, “Heard it Down on the Vine: Jazz Vocals,” will be performed by series storyteller Brother John and Lester “Duck” Warner.

The story begins at 10 a.m. The session will be held again on Nov. 15.

Jazz storytelling sessions are free and take place in the atrium of the American Jazz Museum at the 18th & Vine Jazz District.
