Hall holds Senior lead

Kite, Irwin among seven golfers one shot back

? Walter Hall shot a 3-under-par 69 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the rain-delayed Senior Tour Championship. Hale Irwin, Tom Kite and defending champion Bob Gilder were among seven players tied at 2 under.

Irwin and Gilder have each won four times this year. Irwin needs to finish fourth or better in the season-ending event to become the first senior golfer to win $3 million in a season.

Play, suspended Thursday due to heavy rain, started Friday under cloudy skies with temperatures in the 40s as 46 players tried to complete the first two rounds at Gaillardia Golf & Country Club.

Hall’s only victory in six years on the senior circuit came last year at the Canada Senior Open. His best finish this year was a tie for third at the TD Waterhouse Championship. In 13 tournaments since mid-July, he hasn’t finished higher than a tie for 16th.

Hall was at 2-under through six holes when play was stopped Thursday. He reached 4 under through 14 holes before giving a stroke back with a bogey at No. 15.

Irwin, one of four players who didn’t tee off Thursday, was at 3 under before making bogeys at Nos. 15 and 16.
