QB seeks diversion

Kansas University football player Jonas Weatherbie has applied for a diversion to charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.

Weatherbie, a senior quarterback from Annapolis, Md., made the application on Thursday morning in Lawrence Municipal Court.

Prosecutors said they will now do an intensive background check on Weatherbie and, if his record is clean and he can go one year without acquiring any additional criminal charges, they will dismiss the case.

If city prosecutors approve the diversion agreement, Weatherbie could be required to undergo alcohol counseling and attend Alchoholics Anonymous meetings or an intensive eight-hour alcohol information class.

Police arrested Weatherbie on the charges last July 10 in downtown Lawrence.
