Public affairs show to explore Kansas races

The upcoming 2002 Kansas general election will be discussed today on “Kansas Week,” a public affairs television program produced by KPTS-TV, Wichita.

The live broadcast of the show can be seen at 8:30 p.m. on KTWU-TV, Sunflower Broadband Channel 11.

Scheduled to appear are former state Rep. Henry Helgerson, a Democrat from Wichita; Phillip Brownlee, editorial page editor of the Wichita Eagle; and Journal-World Statehouse reporter Scott Rothschild.

The program is moderated by Dale Goter, KPTS public affairs editor.

Former congressman, governor to give lecture

Former Gov. Mike Hayden and former U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery will speak today on political campaigning at Washburn University in Topeka.

The forum, titled “The Challenge of Democracy: Running for Office in Modern America,” will be at 7 p.m. in room 112 of the Henderson Learning Resource Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Hayden, a Republican, was governor from 1987 to 1991, and is now secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Slattery, a Democrat, represented the 2nd Congressional District from 1983 to 1995.

The forum is sponsored by Washburn’s political science department and the Washburn University Institute for the Study and Practice of Leadership.

Event combines science, Halloween entertainment

Creepy science will be haunting the Kansas Union and Natural History Museum Saturday at Kansas University.

KU is having its annual Dark at the Top of the Hill event, a Halloween celebration, from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Museum scientists will show off some of the creatures they study, and visitors can play Halloween games, hear stories and do crafts at the union.

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and to bring flashlights and cameras. Tickets cost $2.50 and will be available at the event. Admission is free for members of the Natural History Museum.
