Athletes of the Week

Emily Loewen and Lacey Luina

Free State High

Class: Seniors

Sport: Tennis

The week: With apologies to FSHS senior Emily Wang, Loewen and Luina capped a brilliant season with a state doubles title last Saturday at the 6A tournament in Emporia. The pair won the Sunflower League title, a regional title and ended a 31-2 season with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win against Blue Valley North. It was the school’s first doubles title.

Comment: “They just never give up,” FSHS coach Jon Renberger said. “Regardless of the moment and regardless of the conditions, for them to win that state championship match so decisively, that was just incredible.”

Sydney Wilson

Lawrence High

Class: Freshman

Sport: Golf

The week: Wilson probably wouldn’t think much of her performance at the 6A-5A state golf tournament on Monday at Prairie Highlands in Olathe, but the freshman held her ground among the state’s best. She followed up a second place showing at regionals with a 93, one stroke off of an all-state finish. She struggled early, but held her form and displayed remarkable mental toughness for a six-hour round.

Comment: “I expect that of her,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “But sometimes what you expect and what you get aren’t always the same thing. She held on pretty good.”

Micah Mason

Baldwin

Class: Junior

Sport: Football

The week: The Bulldogs beat an undefeated team for the second week in a row last Friday, halting Santa Fe Trail’s win streak at six games. Mason was a huge part of the 34-20 win, rushing for 237 yards on 29 carries and four touchdowns. A big, bruising back with speed to bust a long run at any time, his 72-yard score just before halftime capped Baldwin’s 19-point second quarter.

Comment: “He carries the load,” Bulldogs coach Mike Berg said. “He’s very strong and runs very hard. The team counts on him, and he did a nice job coming through for us.”

Erica Ogle

Baldwin

Class: Junior

Sport: Cross country

The week: Ogle trounced the field at last Thursday’s Frontier League meet at Rim Rock Farm. She covered the two mile course in 12:27.41, more than 20 seconds better than runner-up Megan Stutzman of Paola, in leading the Bulldogs to the team title. A two-time state qualifier, Ogle’s been even better this year, placing in the top 10 at every race this season except one, the Rim Rock Classic. She’ll be one of the favorites at Saturday’s 4A regional in Tonganoxie.

Comment: “Day in, day out, she’s going to be there whether she feels good or not, she’s going to run hard,” Bulldogs coach Mike Spielman said. “She’s just so strong, physically and mentally. That’s probably what’s helped her.”
