The Toy Bowl, a Little League football fixture at Haskell Stadium for years, will be played at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium this Sunday.

Bret Toelkes, head of Lawrence Youth Football Inc., announced the change of venue on Tuesday.

“We’ll rattle around in there,” Toelkes said of the KU facility, “but it will be great for the kids. They’ll have the public address system and the scoreboard working, and the kids will get to use the locker rooms.”

Toelkes said he had hoped to return to the Haskell facility for this year’s competition, but that HINU officials asked LYF Inc. to find another site.

“I realize they’re cash poor,” Toelkes said, “and they said we chew up the field more than anybody who uses it. So we asked KU and they were really good to deal with.”

The Toy Bowl is actually three games  the seventh-grade league championship, and the title contests in the fifth-sixth grade A and B leagues.

Sunday’s first game at noon will send the B regular season champion Cougars (6-0) against the runner-up Hurricanes (5-1). The A game at 2 p.m. will match the league champ Hurricanes (6-0) against the runner-up Baldwin Wildcats (5-1).

The seventh grade game at 4 p.m. will pit league co-champs Central (5-1) and Southwest (5-1).

Admission is $1 or a new toy that will be donated to charity. Although parking will be available all around Memorial Stadium, only the gates on the west side will be open.
