Lawrence Police arrested a 27-year-old man accused of robbing a Kwik Shop clerk early Wednesday morning at gunpoint then leading police on a car and foot chase that ended on Kansas University's campus.

The suspect, a North Lawrence resident, was booked into jail on several charges, including aggravated robbery, theft and reckless driving.

The incident began just before 3 a.m. Wednesday when officers were called to the Kwik Shop, 3440 W. Sixth.

A 20-year-old clerk told police he was alone in the store when the suspect walked in and pulled his jacket up around his face to conceal his identity.

Police said the man then pulled out a gun, robbing the business and stealing the clerk's wallet.

An officer called to the Kwik Shop saw a driver matching the suspect's description near the intersection of Second Street and McDonald Drive.

When the officer turned on his lights and siren, the driver sped away, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

Officers pursued the suspect to Second and Arkansas streets, then toward the area of Fourth and Mississippi streets. The driver then headed south on Mississippi Street toward the KU campus, Pattrick said.

The driver then lost control of his 1995 two-door Toyota, hitting a light pole just north of Jayhawk Boulevard and Sunflower Drive. At that point, with his car disabled, the suspect fled on foot, Pattrick said.

Officers caught and arrested him near a construction area at Watson Library.

Police recovered some cash and the clerk's wallet, but have not yet recovered a firearm, Pattrick said.

Police also are investigating whether the suspect is connected with a similar robbery during the early morning hours Oct. 16 at the Kwik Shop at 15th Street and Kasold Drive, Pattrick said.
