Latest figures said that Douglas County had gained nearly 2,400 new residents during the past year, bringing the total figure to about 63,000 in the county. Many contended Lawrence’s population was at or near 50,000, despite state census figures which annually shortchanged the local headcount.

IN 1962

Two Lawrence High teachers, Stan Roth Jr. and Howard Mehlinger, were honored with national awards for teaching achievements in biology and history, respectively. Mehlinger also was an assistant football coach.

A Journal-World survey showed that Lawrence residents strongly backed President John Kennedy’s critical decision to encircle Communist Cuba with an arms blockade to seal off Soviet nuclear missile activity.
