Apartment burglary reported by students

Two Kansas University students who left town for fall break returned to find their apartment had been broken into and more than $14,000 worth of their belongings stolen.

Police say there were signs of forced entry to a door at the apartment in the 4700 block of West 27th Street.

Among the items stolen were two laptop computers, jewelry, household appliances and electronics, including a DVD player and discs.

Police have no suspects. Officers interviewed a neighbor who said he heard noises coming from the apartment on Friday evening. The students discovered the burglary when they returned to town Saturday night.

Explosive device ruins rural mailbox

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a mailbox explosion in rural Overbrook.

Deputies were called Monday to a 75-year-old woman’s home in the 400 Block of North 750 Road. The woman reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.

When she woke up later Monday morning, she discovered her mailbox had been damaged by some sort of explosive device.

Deputies found a plastic container filled with an unknown liquid and pieces of aluminum foil inside the mailbox.

The Sheriff’s Office still is trying to identify the liquid, which they believe to be some sort of accelerant.

Damage to the mailbox was estimated at $20.
