On Oct. 22, 1902, the Lawrence Journal told of a dead baby found behind an outhouse in west Lawrence. The 19-year-old mother of the girl was identified by name. The Journal noted, “As the girl says the child was born dead, the officers say the only charge that can be placed against her is that of a misdemeanor. She has not yet been arrested.”
