IN 1977 - The use of the new Lawrence Memorial Hospital facility continued to rise, and the September occupancy rate was the highest in local history for that month.

Takeru Higuchi, Distinguished Professor at Kansas University, was to receive the 1977 Kolthoff Gold Medal Award in analytical chemistry, one of the highest international honors that could be paid to anyone in the field.

On Oct. 22, 1902, the Lawrence Journal told of a dead baby found behind an outhouse in west Lawrence. The 19-year-old mother of the girl was identified by name. The Journal noted, "As the girl says the child was born dead, the officers say the only charge that can be placed against her is that of a misdemeanor. She has not yet been arrested."
