Warfield unlucky again

? Eric Warfield must feel snakebit.

The Kansas City cornerback gave up the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds of last week’s loss at San Diego.

Then Sunday, he drew a 25-yard pass interference penalty in overtime that set up Jason Elam’s game-winning field goal in a wild 37-34 loss to Denver.

“We had a blitz called,” Warfield said of that last fateful penalty.

He drew the interference call when he hit Rod Smith as the ball came flying toward them from quarterback Brian Griese.

“He ran straight outside,” Warfield said. “I knew he had a step on me. I honestly thought the ball was there in time because I didn’t look back. I didn’t know if the ball had made it there or not, so I just went to knock the ball down and grabbed his shoulder. And it was PI (pass interference).”

Of course, it wasn’t Warfield who was responsible for the punt that Denver’s Keith Burns blocked in overtime to put the Broncos down close.

“We kind of figured they would inch their way out, get a little closer by running the ball,” Warfield said. “They tried two pass plays. One was unsuccessful. One was a PI.”

The loss leaves the Chiefs 3-4 and in danger of falling out of contention in the tough AFC West. They are now 0-2 in their division, with losses to the Chargers and the Broncos.

It was also the second straight week the Chiefs’ 32nd-ranked defense has failed to hold a fourth-quarter lead.

“We can’t stop anybody. We just can’t stop anybody,” said defensive end Eric Hicks.
