NFL Injuries: Green Bay ironman Favre sprains knee
Brett Favre left during the third quarter of the Green Bay Packers’ 30-9 victory over the Redskins with a sprained left knee.
Favre hobbled off the field and had to be carted away from the sideline after he got sacked by Redskins linebackers LaVar Arrington and Jeremiah Trotter.
“Fortunately, it’s not as bad as it may have looked or felt,” Favre said.
Favre, who started his 164th consecutive game, has damage to the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee, which was wrapped tightly after the game to keep the swelling down. He’ll have an MRI exam on Monday.
“There’s some swelling but not a lot of it. It appears like he’s going to be OK,” Packers coach Mike Sherman said. “There was a lot of concern by us on the sideline, but it appears he’ll be fine.”
The prognosis wasn’t as good for some other players around the league who were injured in Sunday’s games.
Oakland Raiders kick returner/running back Terry Kirby will miss the rest of the season with a broken right leg. He was carted off the field in the third quarter, after a pile of San Diego Chargers rolled onto him following a kickoff return. Kirby underwent surgery at Summit Hospital in Oakland.
The Raiders, who lost 27-21 in overtime for their second straight defeat, have seen their defensive secondary get hit hard by injuries. Rookie cornerback Phillip Buchanon left with a broken left wrist. Buchanon went up to defend a pass in the second quarter and landed awkwardly.
He also had surgery at the Oakland hospital.
Buchanon was filling in for Rod Woodson, who’s been out since Sept. 15 with a broken right shoulder. Woodson might come back next week against Kansas City, but only to return punts.

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre limps onto the stage for a postgame press conference. Favre sprained his left knee in the Packers' 30-9 victory over the Redskins on Sunday in Green Bay, Wis.
Rams cornerback Aeneas Williams might be out for the season after breaking his left leg and spraining his left ankle in the Rams’ win over Seattle.
Rams trainer Jim Anderson said a screw would be inserted into the ankle to stabilize the injury. He said the broken fibula in Williams’ left leg will heal on its own.
“We’ll be able to give a more accurate date as far as his recovery after the surgery,” Anderson said.
Williams was injured by a helmet hit to his leg with 1:46 to go. He was trying to make a tackle and got caught in a pile of bodies.
Travis Jervey, a key player on Atlanta’s special teams, was injured late in the Falcons’ win over Carolina while running the ball. Doctors believe he tore the ACL in his left knee.
Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson was lifted in the fourth quarter after ribs he injured earlier became too painful for him to play.
The Houston Texans lost cornerback Pat Dennis, who sprained his left knee while covering a punt in the second quarter of a 34-17 loss to Cleveland.
The Baltimore Ravens, who already were without starting right tackle Ethan Brooks, lost right guard Bennie Anderson to a knee injury in the first quarter. He was forced to return when his replacement, Jason Thomas, left with a calf injury in the third.
