Jags put Brackens on injured reserve

Jacksonville, Fla. Tony Brackens decided to end the charade Tuesday, calling it quits on a season in which his injured knee kept him from practicing regularly or playing up to his standards.

The Jacksonville Jaguars placed their all-time sack leader on injured reserve, allowing him to have surgery on the ailing left knee that made him a shell of his former Pro Bowl self.

“He has shown patience and perseverance, he has played with pain, and he has tried to be the productive player that we know he is,” Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin said. “But instead of gaining confidence in the knee, he has been losing confidence.”

Miami signs Dickenson

Davie, Fla. The Miami Dolphins signed former Canadian Football League most valuable player Dave Dickenson on Tuesday to improve their depth at quarterback while starter Jay Fiedler is sidelined.

Dickenson was released by San Diego and Seattle earlier this year. He will be the Dolphins’ third quarterback Sunday against Buffalo, when Ray Lucas makes his first start for Miami as Fiedler’s replacement.

Sage Rosenfels becomes the No. 2 quarterback. Fiedler broke his right thumb Sunday at Denver and is expected to be sidelined at least four weeks.

49ers’ Bronson ailing

Santa Clara, Calif. Safety Zack Bronson will be out of the San Francisco 49ers’ starting lineup for six-to-eight weeks after breaking his left foot.

Bronson, the 49ers’ starting free safety for the past two seasons, was hurt during San Francisco’s 28-21 victory over Seattle on Monday night. He had surgery on Monday.

Rams shelve Williams

St. Louis The St. Louis Rams placed offensive lineman Grant Williams on the injured reserve list Tuesday, a day after he had surgery on a broken right leg.

Williams, a 6-foot-7, 328-pound tackle acquired by the Rams in August in a trade with New England, broke his lower right leg and dislocated his right ankle in the second quarter of the Rams’ 28-13 victory Sunday over Oakland.

Williams, a seven-year NFL veteran, had started three games at left tackle in place of Orlando Pace, who has been sidelined since tearing his calf Sept. 25 during practice.

The Rams also re-signed running back Maurice Douglas to the practice squad.

Giants’ Hamilton: Career might be coming to end

East Rutherford, N.J. New York Giants defensive tackle Keith Hamilton intends to return from a season-ending Achilles’ tendon injury, but concedes his career might be over after 11 seasons.

The 31-year-old Hamilton ruptured his right Achilles’ tendon in Sunday’s 17-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons when teammate Lance Legree fell on his leg late in the first quarter.

Bettis in clear

Greensburg, Pa. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis won’t be charged following a sexual assault complaint because the uncle of the woman who accused him may have talked about extorting money from Bettis.

Kennedy suspended

Denver Broncos strong safety Kenoy Kennedy was suspended by the NFL for one game without pay Tuesday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Miami receiver Chris Chambers.

He will miss Denver’s game next Sunday at Kansas City, but will not be fined.

Chambers got a concussion when he went up high for a pass from Jay Fiedler and was hit in the face by Kennedy in the second quarter of Miami’s 24-22 victory Sunday night.
