LHS freshman qualifies for 6A state

? Lawrence High freshman Sydney Wilson carded a 90 Monday and finished second at the Class 6A regional golf tournament at Stagg Hill Golf Course.

“We expected Sydney to go and play well today,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “There were a couple other girls on our team I expected to play better and put themselves in position to qualify.”

That didn’t happen, though, and Lawrence’s team score of 439 put the Lions one stroke ahead of city rival Free State High in fourth place.

Manhattan won the seven-team regional with a score of 370. Runner-up Washburn Rural also earned a state berth with a score of 378.

The only other city golfer to qualify for next Monday’s state tournament at Prairie Highlands in Olathe was Free State junior Ashley Johnson, who qualified for the second year in a row by finishing eighth with a 95 on the par-72 course.

“Ashley really deserves to go,” Free State coach Steve Grant said. “She works hard at her game. She’ll represent us well.”

The regional started after a 90-minute frost delay, which left the course wet after a thaw.

“It was a hard course with a lot of high scores, a really good test,” Grant said.
