Packers promote two DBs

? The Green Bay Packers shored up their injury-riddled secondary Saturday by promoting two defensive backs from their practice squad and placing cornerback Bhawoh Jue on injured reserve.

Erwin Swiney and Todd Franz were added to the 53-man roster in time for the Packers’ game at New England today.

To make room, Jue was placed on IR, ending his season, and recently signed offensive lineman Barrett Brooks was released. The Packers also re-signed wide receiver Devin Lewis to their practice squad.

Jue, a second-year player from Penn State who has dealt with ankle, groin and hamstring injuries since the summer, pulled his left hamstring Monday night against Chicago, on a night four other Packers defensive backs were injured.

Jue is the third Green Bay player to go on IR this season, joining the team’s best offensive lineman, Mark Tauscher (knee), and coach Mike Sherman’s prized free agent, defensive end Joe Johnson (triceps).

Sherman closed practice this week as he sorted out his options on defense, which lost cornerback Tyrone Williams and safety Darren Sharper to hamstring pulls Monday night after cornerback Mike McKenzie aggravated a strained groin in warmups and his backup, Tod McBride, injured a knee.

Wide receiver Terry Glenn was coached on the sideline to be an emergency defensive back in Monday night’s game but wasn’t needed as the Packers pulled away in their 34-21 victory over the Bears.

Sherman signed six-year veteran cornerback Bryant Westbrook on Tuesday and turned to Swiney and Franz after Saturday’s walkthrough.
