IN 1902

Oct. 13, 1902, the Lawrence Journal told of “BIG FIRE AT HASKELLBig Barn Containing Horses, Hay, Oats, Corn and Farm Machinery a Total Loss.” in its headlines. The article began by noting “About 7 o’clock last evening a big fire was discovered in progress at Haskell Institute, and in a short time the skies were illuminated by a great red light that hung over the school. Fifteen or twenty minutes after the fire was first seen the fire department of the city was summoned to the scene, and announced its departure by the sounding of the alarm, which was the first that was generally known of the fire. As soon as people saw the immensity of the fire and learned its location they started toward Haskell in great crowds, on foot or in any kind of rig they could get hold of.”
