Burton blazes to win at Little Trees 300

? Jeff Burton routed the field Saturday, lapping all but three cars while winning the Little Trees 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Burton, a regular in NASCAR’s Winston Cup series, won for the fifth time in 12 Busch Series starts. It was his seventh victory in his last 14 Busch races and the 20th of his career.

Averaging 142.443 mph, he beat pole-starter Michael Waltrip to the finish line by 19.493 seconds more than half a lap on the 112-mile oval.

“I know you are thinking that was kind of ugly, and it was,” Waltrip said. “He clobbered us.”

Waltrip’s Chevrolet led the first 35 laps before Burton’s Roush Racing Ford took the top spot when the leaders pitted under caution. Burton went on to lead 130 of the 200 laps, including the last 19.

“Michael was better than us to start,” the winner said. “The guys kept making changes. I got a great set of tires, and the car just took off from there.

“Every now and then, you sit in a car where you just have to be careful not to mess it up,” Burton added. “That’s the way it was today.”

Waltrip said, “I thought we were better than him early. Then I got a bad set of tires, we adjusted for the bad tires and then the car pushed all day.”

Joe Nemechek finished third, the last driver on the lead lap. He was followed one lap down by Jeff Green, David Green and series leader Greg Biffle.

Biffle complained that he ran the last half of the race with a windshield so covered with oil and dirt he had to sneak peeks out the side window at times to be sure where he was on the track.
