KU alumnus wins $68,094 with five ‘Jeopardy’ victories

The answer: $68,094 and a 2003 Jaguar.

The question: What did 1987 Kansas University graduate Mark Brown win during his appearances on “Jeopardy!”?

Brown, 38, Peoria, Ariz., appeared on five Jeopardy game shows broadcast this week and taped earlier this year. He said he was prevented from talking about his winnings until the final show was televised.

“It was pretty exciting,” he said. “Every single game it seemed like I could have lost. There is an element of luck.”

Brown never lost a game, but contestants must leave the show after winning five games. Sometime next year he will return for taping of Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions.

Brown is an administrative assistant with an engineering company in Peoria.

Citizens for Students seeks bank customers’ change

When visiting Lawrence banks this month, people can make a deposit that helps the public school district.

Citizens for Students, an organization dedicated to raising $100,000 to offset fee increases in Lawrence schools, launched a “Time for Change” campaign in local banks.

“Every bank in Lawrence has a fund-raising box,” said Rosy Elmore, co-chairwoman of Citizens for Students with Jackie Ferguson.

The pocket-change effort will run through Oct. 19.

In addition to this appeal, the group will sponsor a silent auction Feb. 2 at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St.

Citizens for Students will use tax-deductible donations to help students pay enrollment fees and subsidize extracurricular sports and activity fees adopted this year by the Lawrence school board.
