Seabury wants seniors sent out on high note

Seabury Academy seniors Janie Schneider and Anne Stella will experience their first-ever Kansas High School Activities Association-sanctioned home volleyball match tonight.

It will also be their last.

“It’s kind of fitting they are going to be the ones to be the first sent off,” Seahawks athletic director Brian Clyne said of tonight’s 5:30 contest against Topeka Cair Paravel at the East Lawrence Center.

“I know it’s going to be kind of emotional.”

Seabury coach Tracy Kitson hopes she’ll send off her first graduating class with a victory.

“In a game like this, the players often feed off the crowd,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot of excitement and we hope that will put things in our favor.”

Even when Seabury wasn’t a classified school, the Seahawks had a Fan Appreciation night. But tonight the two seniors will get their chance to thank fans in person because they plan to give speeches.

“For me, to watch these girls be recognized is truly special,” Clyne said. “It’s going to be fun.”

Senior nights sometimes involve good-natured gags, but Kitson isn’t sure if her players have planned any trickery.

“If they’re planning something, they haven’t told me,” she said.

What she hopes the Seahawks will see is a dominant victory the seniors can savor.

“We’ve had an up-and-down season, but we really think that this kind of a match could spark us toward the postseason,” Kitson said. “No matter what, it’ll be a night to remember.”
