Seabury sharp at home

Seahawk runners set school-bests at cross country contest

? Seabury Academy runner Adam Davis turned heads Thursday, but it wasn’t because he ran the race of his life.

“I got a lot of crazy looks because of my hair,” said Davis, who had blue dye running down his scalp onto his white tank top.

But the blue ‘do, which stemmed from Seabury’s ‘crazy hair day’ for spirit week, only helped Davis and his Seahawk teammates in their first-ever home cross country meet.

Davis’s ninth-place finish set a Seabury boys record, and freshman Katie Pottorff’s sixth-place finish tied Seabury’s highest mark.

“I think they were really pumped up by the home crowd,” Seabury coach Heath Osborn said. “They really wanted to show people that they could come out and run.

“We told them to come out a little faster today and push themselves a bit harder.”

An inspired Pottorff who lucked out when black streaks faded from her blond locks said running for the first time in a home meet was motivating.

“Yeah, we all wanted to go strong out there today and show our home fans something,” she said.

Seabury academy freshman Regan Sissan finishes strong during the Seahawks' meet on Thursday at Eudora. The meet was Seabury's first home contest.

But the Seahawks weren’t the only entertainers.

McLouth senior Courtney Edmonds won for the fourth time this season, capturing the girls 2-mile event in a time of 12:53.01.

“I really like this course because it’s flat where you can see everything that’s going on and really think about your strategy,” Edmonds said.

The Bulldog said she was surprised by her victory because she had invested so much work into a Monday race at Horton, the course where McLouth has regionals.

“I was really focusing on that race preparing me for the rest of the season,” Edmonds said.

On the boys’ side, Gardner-Edgerton’s Aaron Ballew won for the second time this season, finishing 15 seconds faster than McLouth’s Matt Scarlett.

G-E locked up the boys’ team title with 34 points, and McLouth won the girls’ with 42.

And though Seabury came in next to last on the boys and girls’ sides, Osborn said Thursday wasn’t a hairy day.

But try tomorrow.

“That’s ‘disco inferno day,’ we’ll see what we can do about that,” he said.
