Falcons’ Vick practices, but probably won’t play

Flowery Branch, Ga. With Michael Vick unable to finish practice Thursday, coach Dan Reeves selected Doug Johnson as the starting quarterback for Atlanta’s game at New York on Sunday.

Vick was optimistic after receiving treatment on his sprained right shoulder before lunch, but the pain worsened in passing drills. He shut himself down after 45 minutes of the two-hour workout.

“It wasn’t getting any better, so I just quit throwing,” Vick said. “It was starting to feel less stiff as practice wore on, but it kind of got sore again. I’m going to give it a night of rest and try to throw tomorrow, but I probably won’t play this weekend.”

Vick, who had to leave last week’s 20-6 loss to Tampa Bay, remains listed as doubtful for the game against the Giants (3-2). The Falcons (1-3) will wait until Friday to decide if Vick is fit enough to serve as the No. 2 quarterback.

Smith not 100 percent, vows to play Sunday

Denver Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith said his injured shoulder isn’t 100 percent, but he insisted it would not keep him out of the lineup Sunday night against Miami.

“I’m good, I’m playing, that’s it,” he said Thursday.

Smith suffered a first-degree separation of his left shoulder in Sunday’s 26-9 win over San Diego, but he practiced for the second straight day on Thursday.

“I feel like this: If I practice, I’m damn sure going to play on Sunday,” said Smith, who leads the Broncos with 26 catches for 307 yards and two touchdowns. “I ain’t going to be out there practicing for nothing.”

Browns’ Griffith sidelined

Berea, Ohio Cleveland safety Robert Griffith has a broken bone in his right shoulder and will be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks, the latest blow to a Browns’ defensive backfield that could be missing three starters this Sunday against Tampa Bay.
