Student suspected of selling marijuana

A 23-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly selling marijuana in the parking lot at Naismith Hall, 1800 Naismith Drive.

Someone called Lawrence Police about 11:30 p.m. with a report of possible marijuana sales taking place outside the privately owned dorm.

Officers found the suspect, a Kansas University student, and took him to the Douglas County Jail. He was released on $3,000 bond and was ordered to appear in court Oct. 30 for formal charges.

Eight students vie for Ex.C.E.L. awards

Eight Kansas University students have been named finalists for the university’s Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership award.

The two winners of the award  one male and one female  will be announced between the first and second quarters of Saturday’s Homecoming football game against Colorado.

The award was established in 1991 to recognize students for achievement based on leadership, effective communication skills, involvement in the KU community, academic scholarship and ability to work with a wide variety of students and organizations.

Student Union Activities and the Board of Class Officers picked the finalists, who are Maggie Beedles, Lawrence senior; Erin Michaelis, Hays senior; Irakli Mirzashvili, Ness City junior; Paige Isaacson, Salina senior; Jennifer Huang, Wichita senior; Casie Olberding, Topeka junior; Scott Aripoli, Springfield, Mo., junior; and Maggie Mason, Ontario, Canada, junior.

Knights to begin fund drive to help mentally retarded

The Knights of Columbus will have its annual Tootsie Roll Fund Drive today through Sunday, which Gov. Bill Graves has proclaimed Helping People with Mental Retardation Days.

Members of the knights hand out specially marked Tootsie Rolls and seek donations in front of banks, stores and churches.

Of the proceeds, 80 percent will go to the organization’s councils and be donated to organizations they choose. The remainder will sponsor the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at Fort Hays State University in the spring and sponsor religious education of mentally retarded people.

Church to sell Indian tacos as fund-raising event

Indian Avenue Baptist Church will have an Indian taco sale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the church, 146 Indian Ave., across from Haskell Indian Nations University.

Tacos will be about $5, which includes a drink. Richard and Susie Morris from the Choctaw tribe will cook the fry bread. Proceeds from the sale will go toward renovating the church’s kitchen.

An Indian taco starts with a base of homemade fry bread. Diners then pile on meat and a variety of vegetables.

Barn dance planned tonight

The Lawrence Barn Dance Assn. will have a barn dance at 7:30 p.m. today at the Carnegie Library building at Ninth and Vermont streets. There will be a short beginner’s lesson at 7 p.m.

The caller will be Enid Cocke. Music will be provided by Fox on the Run.

No partner is necessary. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children under 16.
