Would-be robbers invade home

Four people wearing ski masks barged into a residence early Tuesday, roughed up a 74-year-old man who lives there and ransacked the house, Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers said.

The suspects are believed to be two men and two women, and at least one of them may have been armed with a handgun, Sheriff Roy Dunnaway said.

“It’s a pretty bizarre incident,” Dunnaway said. “We don’t see things like this very often.”

The incident occurred about 1 a.m. in the 400 block of Hamilton Street, Dunnaway said. A 93-year-old woman, who also lives at the house and is the man’s mother, was not injured, Dunnaway said.

The man suffered abrasions to his face when he was pushed to the floor but was not seriously injured, officers said.

“They demanded money and then ransacked the house,” Dunnaway said. “As far as we’ve been able to tell, they didn’t take anything.”

The suspects knocked on the door to the house. When the man answered the door, the suspects pushed their way in, according to reports.

Officers, who continued their investigation Wednesday, believe they may have possible suspects. Dunnaway said he did not think the incident was random but declined to elaborate.
